A necessary fiction: The ritualisation of stakeholder practices in New Zealand cinema

    Get PDF
This thesis argues that stability of the concept ‘national cinema’ is located in the discursive positioning of individual films in such a way that they are connected to a national ‘common ground’, one which is ritually accessed via engagement with media such as cinema. This positioning, however, is not quantifiable and may not be identified as arising from any particular production practice, dimension of popularity, theme, style, characteristic of production personnel, and so on. By synthesising the work of several theorists and applying this synthesis to a selection of films, a framework of ideas (around the ritualised ‘flagging’ of the national via the expression of stakeholder interests) is applied to cinema in New Zealand. In particular, an ideoscape is ultimately mapped as a result of applying this framework of ideas. The normative assumptions of national cinema are examined in this way and found to be lacking despite the weight that the term ‘national cinema’ continues to have

Development of an Orthotic Brace for a Canine Valgus Deformity

Angular forelimb deformities are common in canines. The forelimb or antebrachium is comprised of two bones: the radius and ulna. During the growth stage of an immature animal, these two bones maintain a synchronized developmental pattern. This normal developmental pattern may be disrupted due to trauma, congenital malformation, metabolic deficiencies, or fractures of one or both of the bones. To date canine angular limb deformities are corrected by surgical intervention, typically radial osteotomy. However, an alternative treatment option is the use of orthoses. An orthotic is a device applied externally to control or guide a limb or joint. The field of orthotics is relatively new and understudied in veterinary medicine, Practical reasons to utilize a brace are to: 1) avoid the possibility of surgical complications such as infections 2) provide a less expensive treatment option and 3) provide a more rapid treatment that does not require postoperative care and rehabilitation. The purpose of this case study is to create a customized orthotic brace for a valgus deformity in the front left carpus of a 2-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback. Central Texas Orthotics and Prosthetics oversaw the creation of the custom made brace from casting to fitting

Night Soil, Cesspools, and Smelly Hogs on the Streets: Sanitation, Race, and Governance in Early British Columbia

Looking at three communities — Nelson, Vernon, and Prince Rupert — this study traces the early history of urban sanitation in British Columbia. “Health” is interpreted here not just as a medical condition, but as a cultural, social, and moral force that helped shape the character of these new towns. The battle against dirt and disease was linked to civic boosterism and good citizenship. Euro-Canadian medical and engineering professionals created public health hierarchies, established ritualized systems of sanitary practice, and “mapped” sanitary zones within the emerging civic communities. The public health discourse articulated by these men was profoundly racist, constructing Asian residents as the unclean, unhealthy “Other” whose existence threatened good health and social order.

Stokes waves revisited:exact solutions in the asymptotic limit

The Stokes perturbative solution of the nonlinear (boundary value dependent) surface gravity wave problem is known to provide results of reasonable accuracy to engineers in estimating the phase speed and amplitudes of such nonlinear waves. The weakling in this structure though is the presence of aperiodic “secular variation” in the solution that does not agree with the known periodic propagation of surface waves. This has historically necessitated increasingly higher-ordered (perturbative) approximations in the representation of the velocity profile. The present article ameliorates this long-standing theoretical insufficiency by invoking a compact exact n-ordered solution in the asymptotic infinite depth limit, primarily based on a representation structured around the third-ordered perturbative solution, that leads to a seamless extension to higher-order (e.g., fifth-order) forms existing in the literature. The result from this study is expected to improve phenomenological engineering estimates, now that any desired higher-ordered expansion may be compacted within the same representation, but without any aperiodicity in the spectral pattern of the wave guides

CHA Residents and the Plan for Transformation

This series of policy briefs presents findings from more than a decade of research on the people who lived in Chicago Housing Authority properties when the agencylaunched its Plan for Transformation in October 1999. The ongoing, multiyear effort sought to improve resident well-being by renovating or demolishing decaying public housing properties and replacing them with new, mixed-income development
